GIMBLETT GRAVELS GARDEN

This garden is located in the gimlet gravels area of Hawke’s bay known for its dry arid summer weather, it is a wine growing area and is known for its gravelly soils laid down by the old Ngaruroro River, which were exposed after a huge flood in the 1860’s. The brief was to have a garden with seasonal interest flowers but needed to be drought tolerant once established. This is stage 1 of the design which focused on drought tolerant perennial design. The garden was inspired by Beth Chatto’s garden design approach.
